Why items matter in a game about running
Steal an Egg is a multiplayer game, and the other players are the biggest obstacle after the guardians. The moment a divine spawns, a dozen people run for the same egg, and whoever has the better weapon and the right consumables usually walks it home. Items don't add a cent to your income directly, but they decide which eggs end up in your pen.
Weapons: from useless bat to the Hammer
Every player starts with a baseball bat. Hitting someone carrying an egg knocks them back and makes them drop it. The default bat is weak, though. Players shrug it off, and in one race a creator spent most of the 20 minutes wondering why their swings did nothing.
Better weapons come from the index. Completing a biome's index (hatching every pet in it) unlocks that biome's bat skin, and each one hits harder. The Snow index gives the Ice Bat, which a free-to-play run treated as its first real upgrade. One creator was surprised: "I didn't know your bat skin made you stronger."
The Titan Temple Axe comes from finishing the Titan Temple index. It "yeets" players across the map, which turns contested steals in your favour.
The Hammer is the current best weapon, added around the Enchanted Forest update. It swings slowly but has enormous knockback; a Vietnamese creator described it as "knocks players really far, perfect for fighting over eggs". If you hunt divines, earn or buy it.
Fighting tips
- You can swing while carrying an egg. Don't just run when someone closes in.
- Hitting a carrier makes them drop the egg on the spot. Grab it before they recover.
- Mutually assured destruction is real: while two players trade hits, a third often walks off with the egg.
- You can't use items in the safe zone near your base, so fights happen out on the track.
Traps
Traps are placeable items that freeze anyone who runs into them while carrying an egg. Experienced players line the main path with them, especially near the end biomes. One creator lost a giant egg, and with it a 100,000-Robux race, to a single trap on the way home. Two lessons: watch the ground on your way back, and place your own on the route other players use. Traps catch thieves too. One player found a stolen La Vaca egg stuck in their trap and simply picked it up.
Speed consumables
- Doctor's shop speed flask (5th slot): 1.25x speed for 5 minutes. The number one player called it her secret tip, because it lets you carry big eggs past guardians you're technically too slow for.
- Sample shop potions: 1.5x and 2.5x bursts during event weeks, paid in samples.
- Train Potion: double speed gain on the treadmill for a while.
Money and mutation consumables
- 2x cash boost: doubles income temporarily. Bought from the Boss shop with tokens from rifts and boss fights (1,200 tokens), or with Robux.
- Scrambled mutation potion: about a 10% chance to add Scrambled to a placed egg. Event currency only.
- Enchanted Essence: crafted from butterflies, a guaranteed Enchanted mutation.
- Crystals / Rift Shards: event items that apply Shattered or Fractured effects. They can fizzle.
Quest and utility items
- Butterfly Net: the reward inside the Enchanted Tree after the Wisp quest. Equip it during Butterfly Bloom.
- Banjo: hit the glowing mushrooms in the right order (with your bat) to wake a bug NPC, then play its rhythm game. The pattern differs per player. It gives you an egg and a limited banjo. Play the banjo at the right spot and a bridge of magic stairs appears, leading to a hidden machine that wants a divine.
- Lost drone parts: during Dr. Scramble's Revenge, a little robot behind a secret door asked for five lost parts, two hidden in biomes and three dropped by Dr. Scramble's drones.
Which items should a new player get first?
- A trail, because it's cheap and speeds up everything.
- A biome bat from your first completed index.
- A couple of traps for your route once you start stealing eggs other people want.
- Speed flasks before you attempt your first biome above your speed.
Everything else waits until you're hunting eternals and divines. For how these items fit into actual steals, read the stealing tricks guide.
