The first coop

Every Steal an Egg account starts in the Forest, a grassy clearing beside spawn where a fat Chicken sleeps on a nest of eggs. It's the tutorial biome and the only one with no speed requirement. You're meant to walk up, grab an egg and run, and the Chicken is slow enough that you'll make it home even with a brand-new account. She snores loudly; one creator said she sounded like their uncle.

Don't skip past the Forest too quickly, though. Even when you can reach better biomes, the Forest still has things a fresh account needs: index rewards, a decent legendary and the chance to learn guardian behaviour while the stakes are low.

How the Chicken behaves

The Chicken wakes up when you pick up an egg and waddles after you. She's slow, but not harmless. New players do get caught, usually because another player hits them or a trap stops them, not because the Chicken outran them. "There's no way a chicken just trapped me" is a very Steal an Egg sentence.

The Forest egg pool

The Chicken's nest holds a mix of egg colours. You want one of each for the index:

  • Chicken and Golden Chicken: often the very first hatch. The Golden Chicken makes about $1–2 a second.
  • Dog: about $2 a second; one creator's first hatch.
  • Frog: a plain and an epic golden version.
  • Sparrow and Owl.
  • Raccoon: rare, about $46–343 depending on size. A great early find.
  • Fox: epic, about $700–790 a second.
  • Bear.
  • Brr Brr Patapim: the Forest's legendary, the rarest thing the Chicken guards. A silver one made about $2.1K a second; rainbow pushes it past $6K.

Why the index matters here

Each first-time hatch pays an index reward of speed and cash. On a fresh account this is huge: claiming after the tutorial alone gave one player 430 speed, half the Lake's requirement. Later, the Brr Brr Patapim index entry alone paid $180K, roughly a hundred times what the pet itself earns early on.

So the Forest routine is:

  1. Steal one of every egg colour.
  2. Place them all and hatch.
  3. Claim every index reward.
  4. Sell the duplicates, keep the best two or three.

Common Forest mistakes

  • Waiting on the treadmill too early. The first treadmill costs $1,000 and gives very little per step. In the Forest, stealing new egg types is faster speed than running.
  • Ignoring other players. Even in the tutorial area, players hit each other for fun. If someone keeps knocking you over, the safe zone near your base is your friend.
  • Keeping Forest pets forever. By the time you're stealing Desert eggs, Forest pets are worth a few dollars a second. Sell them once they're indexed.

Leaving the Forest

You're done here when:

  • every Forest pet is in your index,
  • you've unlocked the treadmill and bought the first trail,
  • you have 900 speed for the Lake.

That usually takes 10–15 minutes. One trick on fresh accounts: watch for other players dropping eggs from later biomes near spawn. A free-to-play creator picked up an egg someone else had dropped, and it hatched into a legendary Polar Bear from the Snow biome, a free jump on progress.

Forest facts at a glance

  • Top rarity: Legendary (Brr Brr Patapim)
  • Best early pet: Fox or a lucky Raccoon
  • Best reason to return: missing index entries
